The 25-Year Handmade
Book Series

The artist describes her bookmaking process in this video.

For three decades I had worked on public murals, portraiture and fine art. For my wedding at age fifty-four I made a book. Then another huge event happened; the demise of Kodachrome and Ektachrome. Documenting one’s art had to be reinvented. In an effort to go beyond digital I came up with this extensive project. I will be close to eighty years old when all twenty-five volumes are completed.

The 25-Year Handmade Book Series can be purchased by contacting Emily directly or at the Carrboro ArtsCenter where it is currently on display. Each mixed-media volume in the series is an exhibition in miniature. Open one, and discover unexpected materials and tiny treasures inside. The cover of Volume V is a clear sheet of real mica, framed; the spine is a piece of hand-stamped aluminum can. Volume XII is a corrugated box with 12 dollhouse-sized books nested inside. Volume VI is accompanied by a 6-by-6-inch oil painting that is also depicted on the cover. Turn over the painting and find a wee hand-bound book tucked into the wooden armature. With each unique volume, which she duplicates by hand 37 times, Emily experiments with new techniques and materials, picking up skills along the way.
